OPTI CLINICS
Additionally we may offer Opti Clinics that are intended for our motivated Opti sailors of the Race Team who want to improve and hone their racing skills to make a significant step forward. We get together with an other local team(s) to add diversity to coaching styles and levels. The clinics are designed to offer a weekend of training with more boats with higher level expectations or regatta feel. These are great times for developing both Upwind and Downwind speed, as well tactics and race strategy against larger fleets.

What to know about the team !
Do you want to learn advanced boat handling skills, build confidence or just know how to get every last tenth of a knot out of your boat’s speed? Does your sailor have dreams of sailing in high school, college ? Don’t be afraid to dream big when you join our race team! Racing a sailboat builds camaraderie, promotes travel to fun and new destinations with friends and family, and can establish a passion for a lifelong sport.
Split into two different levels dependent on skill and age, sailors of the OPTI RACE TEAM will either be placed on
1. Green Fleet ; is our entry-level Learn to Race program. The practices and regattas are tailored to meet the needs of beginner level racers. Every great racing sailor started out their sailing career in the number one junior fleet in the world, the Optimist. The Green Fleet program is the foundational class to what could become a lifetime sport and days filled with adventure! Being a part of a sailing team teaches life skills such as confidence, independence, critical thinking, and work ethic. At KHYF we understand that our future is GREEN! That means all Green Fleet Sailors will still get the same expert coaching as the Opti Champ Fleet Team. We do not ask our Green Team sailors to travel far, but we do encourage some local regattas, if possible . However, there is no pressure at the Green Fleet regattas, all are focused on a safe learning environment. The OPTI Race Team Coach will lead the Green Fleet Sailors and their families through an introductory sailing campaign.
2. Champ Fleet; After sailors have gained experience in the Green Fleet and sailed Green Fleet regatta's for about a year, sailors often can advance onto our Champ Fleet and compete in Red, White, and Blue fleet events locally or nationally depending on the desires of the family. KHYF is dedicated to the education and training of these young athletes and have sought out the best coaching for this program. Sailors competing on the Champ Fleet level will find tougher competition and more challenging courses. It’s a rewarding fleet full of amazing opportunities that can extend to an international scale.
The Opti Class in the US is organized by the USODA and KHYF was honored to host the 2021 Optimist West Coast Championship.
Our Race Team competes at both local and national regattas throughout the season.
KHYF provides a weekly practice schedule and provides coaching at all events on the youth regatta calendar.
MANDATORY ATTENDANCE:
PARENT / SAILOR MEETING ON :
Parent Participation – Fund Raising
We expect all families to participate in our fundraising efforts. Our 2 main fund raising efforts are a spring Sail-A-Thon event with an auction and a fall GoFundMe effort.
We ask for your participation in soliciting donations for these events.
---- Participation – Volunteer Hours
We need ongoing help from ALL parents of the team. We ask that all team families help at Youth regattas that KHYF hosts (Ken Hoover Carrie #6). In addition, we require all families to contribute volunteer hours to help make our program successful. We have detailed descriptions of many of the ways you can help. If you have not signed up for a volunteer task, one will be assigned to you. Here are some of the ways that parents can make a valued contribution:
. Join the Committee for our Spring Fundraising event.
. Be a Parent Volunteer at a KHYF hosted regatta
. Drive an Opti trailer or coach boat trailer to an away regatta
Class Membership:
We strongly encourage all race team members to join both US Sailing and the United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA). These memberships may be required at the regattas we encourage you to sail in. Membership supports USA sailing on many levels.
