"Hope for nice weather, but prepare for the worst!"
Sailing is year-round which means very sunny days in the summer and cold, windy days in the winter. California temperatures can fluctuate 20 degrees or more in one day so it's important to get the right gear for your sailor.
You don't need "sailing specific gear" right away. Having sailing-specific items is great, but you can wear regular clothing to get started:
Old fleeces, jogging/work-out pants under your shorts work great as layers
Old sneakers are acceptable for footwear
Rain jackets and pants are okay until you get sailing spray tops and bibs
Focus on the Essentials When you decide to purchase sailing gear, it can be overwhelming so start with the essentials. There are a lot of components to sailing gear which can add up so focus on the below and add items from there:
Life Jacket / PFD must be Coast Guard approved TYPE III with whistle.
Wet-suit or bibs in winter or sailing shorts when it gets warmer.
Closed toed shoes or sailing boots must be worn at all times.
Warm Fleece
Hat and/or Gaitor
Sunscreen
Reusable Water Bottle
Notebook to take notes in class
Durable bag that fits all of our items. Please label your items clearly with your name.
Purchasing Gear There are many cost-effective ways to acquire the appropriate gear. We've provided some resources below, but we encourage you to ask "seasoned" parents and team members who can be a great resource or may have used gear to sell.
The right gear makes the difference. You and your sailor(s) will want to start investing in sailing-specific gear as they become more committed to the sport. It is an investment but the right gear makes a big difference in keeping your child warm, dry and protected from the sun.
Below is a helpful guide to sailing gear and the link will take you to our KHYF Gear storefront where you can find some of the essentials you may need. Please note that coaches have the ability to deem a sailor's gear unacceptable for sailing and not allow them on the water until they have appropriate gear for the given conditions.
