Race Team
The
KHYF Jr. Race Team is designed to provide an
opportunity for those young sailors who wish to further
their sailing skills beyond summer sailing by participating in
the sport year-round. The program offers practices as well
as coaching at many local and regional race events
throughout the year. The King Harbor Youth Foundation offers
the use of it’s equipment to members who do not own their own
boat. All of this is provided at a nominal cost.

History
Created in 1992 with only 7 members, the race team has a relatively short, but well-accomplished history. We’ve held a roster as large as 42 members and have developed an extensive equipment list that includes over 30 sail and motor boats for use by our young team members.
Development typically begins in the US Sabot, where each sailor is assigned a boat, according to their team ranking. The young sailor is responsible for helping maintain the boat, and may use it for competitions. There are eleven regional Sabot regattas held annually at different harbors from Santa Barbara to King Harbor.
As sailors grow bigger and older, most will graduate into the Laser radial, Laser full-rig, and CFJs, where they compete in larger fleets and travel greater distances. Training becomes much more advanced at this level and teamwork is strongly emphasized, as many of these boats require more than one person.
The KHYF Race Team also has a strong tradition of Match Race training, which encompasses a format like the America's Cup -only 2 boats racing at one time.
