About Us |
Who We Are
- The King Harbor Youth Foundation is a non-profit corporation created to promote youth sailing in Southern California .
- Founded in 1982, we operate on the site of the King Harbor Yacht Club in Redondo Beach , CA
- Our mission is to provide access
to the sport of sailing to local girls and boys of all backgrounds,
in order to build self-esteem, teamwork and a respect for
the environment.
- We run programs in instruction, competitive racing, and community outreach for children 8 years of age and up.
- We are funded by individual contributions,
program fees and fundraisers.

Program Results to Date
- Summer
Sailing – Over 2,000 girls & boys ages 8 years
and up have learned how to solo their own sailboat through our
two-week summer sailing courses.
- Race
Team – Over 200 girls & boys have competed in hundreds
of local, regional national and national sailing regattas
through our year-round race team.
- High
School Sailing – Students at five local high schools
now have the opportunity to practice and compete on the Inter
Scholastic Sailing circuit. Many of our students have gone on
to sail on college sailing teams, and several have returned as
program instructors.
- New
Channels – Over 100 underprivileged, disabled and at-risk youth from ages 10 to 18 have spent a day on the water with us, being introduced to the basics of sailing and seamanship.

Where We're
Going
- Our goal is to dramatically increase our impact on the youth of the surrounding South Bay communities through:
- Extending our programs to a broader audience of local youth
- Improving the
quantity and quality of our instruction, coaching and equipment
- Increasing our financial resources and sustainability

Why We're Different
- Why Sailing? Sailing provides children a unique sense of independence and freedom, while also requiring responsibility, safety, teamwork and a respect for the environment. A day on the water can create memories that last a lifetime. A summer on the water and participation on our teams can build equally lasting self-esteem and friendships.
- Why the King Harbor
Youth Foundation? KHYF is the only youth sailing program in Los
Angeles County where children do not need to provide their own
sailboat. Scholarships are also available for all programs that
have fees, making sailing accessible to all.
