Adult Sailing Courses

Beginner Keelboat Sailing

A basic keelboat course emphasizing beginner sailing skills in a keelboat setting. Students will spend roughly 30% - 40% of their time in the classroom for lectures and chalk talks. The rest of the time will be spent practicing skills tought in the classroom. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Boat parts, rigging and terminology
  • Safety
  • Understanding wind and how sails work
  • Steering
  • Basic sail trim
  • Right of way rules
  • Knots
  • Docking

**There are no prerequisites for this class.

Intermediate Keelboat Sailing

**Prerequisite: Beginner Keelboat Sailing or recommendation from Coach/Director

A slightly more advanced course designed to prepare you for sailing independently. After passing this course, you will be qualified to take the "Qualified Individual" check-out and rent the available KHYF Keelboats. Topics in this course include but are not limited to:

  • Heavy weather sailing
  • Anchoring and mooring
  • Advanced sail control
  • Reading wind
  • Weather and forecasting
  • Spinnaker Sailing
  • Advanced safety
